Essential

Why Car Insurance is Important in Georgia

Car insurance is critical in Georgia to safeguard drivers against the risks and uncertainties of being on the road.

  • Accidents and Heavy Traffic: Georgia's busy highways, like I-75 and I-85, see a high volume of car accidents annually, making insurance essential to manage repair costs and liability.
  • Weather Risks: From sudden storms to flooding, Georgia’s unpredictable weather can lead to vehicle damage.
  • Uninsured Drivers: Having coverage protects you when an uninsured or underinsured driver is involved in an accident.
  • Theft and Vandalism: Georgia's metro areas, such as Atlanta, report higher rates of vehicle theft and vandalism, highlighting the importance of comprehensive insurance coverage.

Coverage

What Does Car Insurance Cover in Georgia?

Georgia is an "at fault" state, meaning the driver who is responsible for causing an accident is also responsible for the financial damages, including medical bills and property repair costs. Auto insurance in Georgia must meet the state’s minimum liability coverage requirements, which include:

  • Bodily Injury Liability: Coverage for others’ medical costs when you’re at fault. Minimum $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident.
  • Property Damage Liability: Coverage for others’ vehicles or property when you’re at fault. Minimum $25,000 per accident.
  • Uninsured Motorist (UM) Coverage: Split into bodily injury and property damage. Coverage for both your vehicle and injuries if the other party doesn't have sufficient insurance. Limits typically mirror liability, but your UM limits cannot be more than your liability.
  • In Georgia, you have two additional options of UM Coverage to select either Added On or Reduced Coverage:
    • Added On Coverage: This option will pay out in addition to the at-fault driver’s liability coverage limits up to your UM limits.
    • Reduced Coverage: This option will reduce your UM limits by the at-fault driver’s liability limits
    • UM Coverage is added to all policies, but coverage selections and rejections are required in writing.

If you’re the at fault driver, liability-only coverage will not pay for repairs or medical expenses to you. Additional coverage is needed in that case.

Options

Additional Coverage Options for Georgia Car Owners

While meeting Georgia’s minimum insurance requirements is mandatory, it is highly recommended to consider additional coverage for comprehensive protection. Some popular additions include:

  • Collision Coverage: Helps pay for damages to your vehicle caused by a covered accident based on your deductible.
  • Comprehensive Coverage: Helps pay for non-collision damages or theft to your vehicle caused by a covered accident based on your deductible.
  • Roadside Assistance: Helps pay for the cost of towing your vehicle if it cannot be driven due to an accident or breakdown.
  • Rental Reimbursement Coverage: Helps pay for the cost of a rental car while your vehicle is being repaired after a covered accident.
  • Medical Payments (MedPay): Helps pay for medical expenses for you and your passengers in the event of an accident.

There are some coverage options that are more specific. If you have a car with unique customizations, it’s best to bring that up to your agent. Goosehead Insurance provides our clients with personalized coverage to keep them protected.

Cost

How Much Does Car Insurance Cost in Georgia?

Several factors influence car insurance costs in Georgia:

  • Driving Record: A clean history lowers premiums, while tickets or accidents can increase costs.
  • Vehicle Type: Luxury or sports cars tend to have higher insurance rates compared to standard vehicles.
  • Location: Urban areas like Atlanta may have higher rates due to increased traffic and accident risks.
  • Age: Younger drivers typically face higher premiums due to their lack of experience, while older, more experienced drivers often benefit from lower rates.

What you pay for your car insurance premium depends on the level of coverage you have as well as the above factors. For the legal minimum, Georga drivers pay an average of $1,000 annually, while those with more coverage pay an average of $2,900 annually
