Essential

Why Car Insurance is Important in Indiana

Car insurance is mandatory in Indiana, and it’s an essential part of protecting yourself and others on the road. Indiana drivers encounter a variety of challenges that make having the right coverage critical. Some of these include:

  • Unpredictable Weather: Indiana experiences everything from heavy snowstorms in the winter to severe thunderstorms and tornadoes in warmer months, increasing the likelihood of weather-related accidents.
  • Congestion in Urban Areas: Larger cities like Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, and Evansville can be hubs of heavy traffic, creating a greater potential for collisions.
  • High-Speed Rural Roads: Indiana’s rural roads and highways often have higher speed limits, which can lead to more severe accidents when collisions occur.

Coverage

What Does Car Insurance Cover in Indiana?

Indiana is an “at-fault state,” meaning that the driver responsible for causing an accident is held financially liable for damages. At a minimum, Indiana requires drivers to carry the following coverage types and limits:

  • Bodily Injury Liability: Coverage for others’ medical costs when you’re at fault. Minimum limits are $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident.
  • Property Damage Liability: Coverage for others’ vehicles or property when you’re at fault. Minimum requirement of $25,000 per accident.
  • Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM) Coverage:Split into bodily injury and property damage. Coverage for both your vehicle and injuries if the other party doesn't have sufficient insurance. Limits are typically the same as liability and cannot be more than your liability limits.
    • Not required by Indiana, but typically added to standard policies. However, if you wish to remove it from your policy, or adjust the limits, you must do so with your agent in in writing.

While meeting the state minimum ensures basic compliance with the law, it only covers the other party if you’re found at-fault. To cover your own vehicle, you’ll need to add coverage to your policy.

Options

Additional Coverage Options for Indiana Car Owners

Whether you’re commuting through city traffic, making long-distance trips, or simply navigating Indiana’s rural roads, it’s important to consider coverage that goes beyond the minimum requirements:

  • Collision Coverage: Helps pay for damages to your vehicle caused by a covered accident based on your deductible.
  • Comprehensive Coverage: Helps pay for non-collision damages to your vehicle caused by a covered accident based on your deductible.
  • Medical Payments Coverage (MedPay): Helps with medical expenses for you and your passengers, regardless of who is at fault.
  • Roadside Assistance: Helps pay for the cost of towing your vehicle if it cannot be driven due to an accident or breakdown.
  • Rental Car Reimbursement: Helps pay for the cost of a rental car while your vehicle is being repaired after a covered accident.
  • Increase Liability Limits: Some drivers see the benefit of increasing their liability limits to avoid costly out-of-pocket expenses if they’re found to be at fault.

Some drivers may fall into usage-based coverage options, while others may want to pursue coverage for modified vehicles. Goosehead Insurance specializes in customizing policies for our clients, so bring up these unique situations to our agents to build a policy that works for you.

Cost

How Much Does Car Insurance Cost in Indiana?

The cost of car insurance Indiana residents pay depends on several variables, including:

  • Driving Record: Good driving habits can help keep your premium low, while accidents and traffic violations generally lead to higher rates.
  • Vehicle Type: The make, model, and age of your car impact your insurance costs. Luxury or high-performance vehicles typically incur higher premiums.
  • Location: Residents in high-traffic areas like Indianapolis may face higher rates, while policyholders in rural parts of Indiana often see lower premiums.
  • Mileage: The more miles you drive annually, the greater your exposure to risk and the higher your insurance cost may be.
  • Age and Driving History: Young and inexperienced drivers generally pay more than middle-aged drivers with clean records.

In addition to these factors, what you pay depends on your coverage selections. On average, Indiana drivers pay around $500 annually if they meet the minimum requirements. However, policies with more coverage can cost, on average, around $1,800 annually for Indiana.
